Songs worthy

|
Looking back on the best songs of the 'oughts as I guess we're calling them, I thought I could add my top songs of the decade. Going forward, I want to start posting daily things that I find that I like. I have the best taste in the universe, so you're all very lucky to have this blog. You're welcome.

Songs- (in no particular order)

John Wayne Gacy Jr- Sufjan Stevens
Heartwrenching, painful, disturbing, beautiful.

Rebellion (lies)- Arcade Fire
The best song to sleep, or not sleep to. Probably my favorite song, ever.

Take me to the Riot- Stars
"Saturday nights in neon lights, Sunday in the cell. Pills enough to make me feel ill, Cash enough to make me well"

Love Lost- The Temper Trap
"I know it's hard, but I can still hear it beating. So if you flash your heart, I won't mistreat it, I promise"

A&E- Goldfrapp
Off their 2008 album, Seventh Tree, this song is probably one of the best recovery songs ever. Clear, pure vocals with a synthy, yet still folksy backing melody showcases this band's true versatility.

Airplanes- Local Natives
Barely making it into the oughts, this band has a freaking HUGE amount of potential. When their album, Gorilla Manor, drops in the US, hopefully sometime this year I think it's going to generate a lot of buzz really quickly.

Strangers in the Wind- Cut Copy
"Run to the lights of the city, These moments will pass and we'll be there" So gay for that.

Colourless Colour- La Roux
"Early nineties decor, it was a day for. We wanted to play but we had nothing left to play for. Colourless colour. Once in fashion and soon to be seen."

Mr. Brightside- The Killers
Go ahead, take away my hipster membership card, I wasn't using it anyways. That's not true. But seriously though, this song was great. In the days before Brandon Flowers got all mormon and crap, The Killers were a really great band, and this song was amazing when it came out. Judge me, I dare you.

Get it Faster- Jimmy Eat World
Honestly, this album almost made it on the best albums list simply because it was really my first introduction to decent music. Argue with me on that one if you want, but this band really opened a lot of doors for me. This song is just angry, angsty, sexy, and dirty. Everything I wanted out of music at the age of 14.

The C.N. Tower Belongs to the Dead- Final Fantasy
Simply amazing. One time I had a dream that my friend Ryan and I were being chased by zombies in the C.N. Tower. I blame Owen Pallett, my future husband. (Can I say that enough)

Hospital Beds- Cold War Kids
"Put out the fire boys, don't stop, don't stop. Bring the buckets by the dozens, bring your nieces and your cousins. Put out the fire on us."

This Modern Love- Bloc Party
I don't think I can accurately describe how important this song is to me.

My Boy Builds Coffins- Florence and the Machine
"My boy builds coffins for the rich and the poor, Kings and Queens have all knocked on his door. Beggars and liars, Gypsies and thieves. They all come to him 'cause he's so eager to please!"

How it Ends- Devotchka
I will die to this song. period.

Belated Decade Retrograde

|
I know it's like, January 5th, but I thought I'd get around to giving the traditional "tops" of the decade. It's kind of hard to look back all the way, considering 10 years ago I was blinded by angst, barely aware of what was going on around me. I have however, compiled a pretty good list of what I at least cared about over the last ten years.

Albums (no particular order)
Stars- Set Yourself on Fire
"I'm not sorry I met you, I'm not sorry it's over, I'm not sorry there's nothing to say." Need I say more?

Sufjan Stevens- Come on Feel the Illinoise
Amazing album that always without fail makes me want to go to Chicago.

The Teenagers- Reality Check
Synthy french sleaze indie pop. Everything I want in an album. "I loved my American cunt."

Arcade Fire- Funeral
When I die, in the year 3010, I will name this the greatest album of my life. Hands down.

Bloc Party- A Weekend in the City
Their lesser known sophomore album I like the best. They really knew how to draw me in the with album title, and art, which makes me cry. Nuff said. "Let's drive to Brighton on the weekend."

Passion Pit- Manners
UUUghhghgghghgh. Yeah.

The Temper Trap- Conditions
When I fist caught wind of these guys last winter, I fell in love. I waited almost a year for this album to drop in the US, and I can honestly say despite hyping it for that long, I was not at all disappointed.

The Go! Team- Thunder, Lightning, Strike
This album represents a so much more fun, carefree time in my life. I wanted to get that damn tiger as a tattoo. Maybe I should resurrect that plan.

Goldfrapp- Supernature, et al.
This band is one of the rare ones that never ceases to amaze me. Supernature stands out, but barely past the earlier "Felt Mountain" and 2008's "Seventh Tree". Constantly reinventing themselves, always with the most impeccable sound and look, they are simply amazing.

Final Fantasy- has a good home
This album is just chock full of good stuff. I can't help but love every second of it, after all, one day Owen Pallett and I will marry and run away to the South of France and live happily ever after together.

So this is all I have time for right now. I'm planning on doing a top songs post in the next few days.
